The Chippy Chapters Reading Club have enjoyed shadowing The Yoto Carnegie Book Awards this year. Students were challenged to read and review the seven books shortlisted for this important international book award. During Reading Club we discussed the themes (including post apocalyptic UK, The Cold War, mental health, Greek myths, and racism) and merits of all the books.

On Carnegie Day itself, the group travelled to Burford School and enjoyed a wonderful day working alongside the Burford students to create imaginative, informative and entertaining presentations on each of the shortlisted books.  The librarians were delighted with how well the students worked together and impressed by the quality of the presentations.

The Year 7 members of Reading Club were invited by Magdalen College School to watch a performance of a brand new musical adaptations of ‘The Hobbit’ at The Oxford Playhouse.  The play was a huge hit with the packed audience of school children. The acting and singing was fantastic and the staging was magical.

After the play had finished, we took the opportunity to visit Waterstones Book Shop. The students enjoyed browsing  through their beautiful children’s book department and came up with a long wishlist of books to purchase for the school library next year.
