Headteacher’s letter July 9th 2021

Dear Parents and Carers

Right now, the year 11s are getting ready for their prom at Heythrop. It will be a night they deserve and my thanks to colleagues for all of the careful planning behind the scenes (!), but also to the students and families who have been so patient and supportive.

COVID Update

Whilst our two cases became one earlier this week, we remain vigilant and prepared for further positive cases amongst our students. On Tuesday, the government confirmed that all students would return to school in September after two negative lateral flow tests. As before, the tests will be voluntary and fresh permissions will be gathered from families in due course. The key difference will be that families will be asked to book a time to suit and then return home after each test. Before the end of term I shall set out ‘the plan’ for September that will involve us having to review the first day of term for each key stage.

I cannot tell you how much we are looking forward to the full relaxation of the restrictions that have kept us safe over the past 18 months. One last effort should see us through.

Reporting to Parents and Carers

We are approaching our last reporting cycle of the year and so please look out for your son or daughter’s personal scorecard report (years 7-10) and academic report (years 7-10 and year 12) next week. I understand that the two reports will arrive separately.

Celebration Assemblies

Celebration assemblies will take place on the final day of this term (Thursday 22 July). After such a disjointed year, it provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students’ successes. Tutors are very much looking forward to speaking about their tutees who have shown exemplary character, whilst teachers will be recognising those students who have made exceptional progress. Of course, all student achievement is recognised through the personal scorecard allowing students to end the term on a high and feeling a sense of belonging to a community that aspires to be the best you can be.

Competition Success

When I visit lessons or look in students’ books I am often humbled by the things even our youngest students have been able to achieve. This is particularly true when I visit physics, chemistry and languages lessons! With this in mind, I am delighted to share news of success amongst some of our linguists of the future in years 7 and 8. This term, Miss Richmond has been leading MFL team and students through a national translation competition.

Students in years 7 and 8 and been doing some work in class that was subsequently entered into the competition. Please see more detail in next week’s article in the CNS-Newsletter but I wish to congratulate the following students:

  • Year 7s: Amelia Hergt, Taylor Hogan, Archie Orrock, William Stanton, Sangid Rahman, Ned Busby, Stan Jackman, Evie Blackwell, Harriet Pike and Oona Nicol
  • Year 8s: George Belcher, Oliver Hayes, James Price, Ossie Knox, Jessica Cunningham, Sandy Motley, Jessica Benham, Chloe Bristow, Anna Castle, Mario Buga, and Lottie Heath

EURO 2020 – Is it coming home?

After the events of the past week on a single stretch of grass in London, I am just going to stand back and avoid jinxing the outcome on Sunday.

Have a great weekend and an even better Sunday evening. Unless the PM directs otherwise, the school will be open as normal at 8:40am!

Yours faithfully

Mr Doherty
