CNS Summer School

During the summer break, CNS hosted its first ever Summer School to support the Year 6’s with their transition from primary to secondary school. Wow what a week! With over 125 students attending daily, the week was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.

The activities of Summer School were based on the CNS core values of ‘Courage, Compassion’, Curiosity’ and ‘Creativity’. The New Year 7 cohort were a delight to work with, showed  courage on the first day as they met new staff and peers and were compassionate towards each other as new relationships were built.

The students began each day by attending either a Maths, English or Science lesson. Their curiosity was piqued as they learnt about ‘convection’ with Mr Turvey in Physics by creating mini hot air balloons from tea bags! Miss Smith brought the popular game of ‘Among Us’ to life as she used the PH scale to determine the murderer in the class and created quite a stir with her rainbow fizz finale to the lesson. Mrs George looked at life through a lens – creating a cohort of budding scientists ready to analyse materials using microscopes. In Maths, students created shapes and worked out the area using Pick’s Theorem and last but not least Ms Skill and Mr Doherty,  using the book ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio, inspired students to write their own precepts to help set their sights high as they begin a new phase in their education.

In the afternoon students had the choice to get a bit more creative by attending either a Cooking, Dance, Drama or Art Workshop led by our wonderful extra-time team or let off some steam and enjoy a bit of healthy competition by attending either trampolining, multi sports or table tennis. The pizzas and cookies that the students baked left a scintillating smell in the Technology block and proved to be a popular activity with our  6th Form mentors.

Our Year 7 students had a chance to navigate our school and experience our fantastic facilities through the treasure hunt run by Mr Jarvis. Students finished their week by visiting Chipping Norton Theatre to watch the film ‘Wonder’ and celebrated their initiation to Chipping Norton School by inviting parents to join us for a party in the park – aka the school field.
