The department is well equipped with three networked computer rooms and a computer for each student. Students develop a range of skills in year seven that they can use across the school curriculum.

Key Stage 4

The course aims to challenge and develop students understanding and use of ICT skills and applications. They are taught basic business skills that can be used across the school curriculum and into the work place. Students also undertake work on three units that teaches them new and emerging ICT skills.

Unit 1 (Compulsory) ICT Skills for Business – 40%

Course Content:

Unit 1 – ICT Skills for Business

Students are taught and produce evidence of  the use a wide range of business ICT skills, including;

  • Safe working practices applied in business.
  • Internet Research
  • Email
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Creation of business documents
  • Creation of a business presentation

Unit 4 – Design and Create interactive multimedia Products

Students are taught how to design and create an interactive multimedia product.

  • Review existing interactive multimedia products
  • Design an interactive multimedia product
  • Source and store suitable multimedia elements
  • Create the interactive multimedia product
  • Test the interactive multimedia product
  • Seek feedback and suggest improvements

Unit 20 – Creating Animation for the www.

Students review, design, create and test an animation for the www (such as an advertising banner). They are taught how to effectively use Macromedia Flash CS3.

Key Stage 5 (AS and A2 Level)

Course Aims:

  • Develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of ICT in vocational
  • contexts
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the components, functions and applications of information systems within a range of organisations
  • Develop an understanding of the main principles and skills of solving problems using ICT
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding of ICT and use skills (e.g. planning, research evaluation, problem solving) in vocational contexts
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of information systems on organisations’
  • personnel policies and practices
  • Develop project management skills and an understanding of the need to work with others

Summary of Course Structure:

There is an examination for unit two and the exam board will set and mark an assignment for unit nine, but for the other units you will produce and collect evidence for a portfolio, which will be a showcase for your achievements.
